Goldman Sachs Bans Traders and Bankers from Using AI
Only engineers at the company are now permitted to use it
Internal guidelines from Goldman Sachs issued in October 2026 restricted access to Anthropic’s Claude Code and Microsoft’s GitHub. Previously, traders and bankers had used these tools to monitor trading flows and create content.
The decision has sparked dissatisfaction among employees who had already been using AI in their work. In July, Goldman Sachs’ Chief Information Officer Marco Argenti spoke positively about developing programs through AI text prompts and cited traders and asset management staff as examples, noting they could build prototypes and pass them to engineers.
Goldman Sachs spokesperson Nick Carratura explained the policy revision as a matter of performance and risk management. According to him, the experimental phase is over, and access will be retained only for employees best suited for the long-term use of such tools.
