Clients Withdraw $4.9 Billion from Binance Accounts Following Exchange's Resumption of Operations
This amounts to approximately 3% of the exchange's assets prior to the recent cyberattack
According to DefiLlama's estimate, the outflow from Binance reached approximately $4.9 billion by Monday morning. This represents about 3% of the total value of assets held on the exchange a day before the cyberattack.
After detecting the hack, Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals to identify and address the vulnerabilities exploited by the attackers. Earlier reports indicated the theft of assets worth $6.3 billion. Preliminary data suggests that hackers may have used a developer's laptop to conduct unauthorized transactions.
On Saturday, the U.S. FBI accused the TraderTraitor group, linked to North Korea, of the theft, as reported by The Financial Times. The bureau expects the stolen assets to be converted and "laundered." Binance CEO Richard Teng stated that the exchange will compensate clients for the damages from the hack using its own funds.
