The Central Bank of Uzbekistan officially denied information appearing on social media about an allegedly planned introduction of a 1 million sum banknote into circulation. The regulator's press service stated that such reports "are unfounded, false, and do not correspond to reality."

The denial was prompted by viral posts featuring a banknote design that depicted the first president of the republic, Islam Karimov. The regulator urged citizens to rely exclusively on verified data from the Central Bank's official resources.

The Central Bank reminded that, according to Article 40 of the Law "On the Central Bank," the exclusive right to issue cash banknotes in the country belongs solely to the regulator. The design and samples of banknotes or coins are approved by the Central Bank and must be coordinated with the Senate Kengash of the Oliy Majlis. Descriptions and release dates of new banknotes are always published in the media in advance.

Currently, the largest banknote in Uzbekistan's national currency system remains the 200,000 sum note, which was put into circulation in July 2022.

This is not the first time the regulator has encountered such misinformation: in May, the Central Bank similarly refuted false rumors about an allegedly planned release of a 500,000 sum banknote.
