Moderna Stock Falls Despite Successful Cancer Vaccine Trials
Why This Is Happening: A Case Analysis
Pharmaceutical giant Moderna, in collaboration with Merck, has developed a personalized vaccine for melanoma (skin cancer). It works in combination with another drug, Keytruda.
In the final stage of clinical trials, the vaccine demonstrated excellent results. The risk of cancer recurrence or death decreased by 42% compared to using only one drug. Additionally, the risk of cancer spreading (metastasis) or death was reduced by 38%.
Investors had placed enormous hopes on this project because, for Moderna, it represents an opportunity not only to solidify its position in the COVID-19 or flu vaccine market but also to make a breakthrough in oncology treatment.
So why did Moderna's stock drop by 25% with such positive news?
The stock market often follows the rule: 'buy the rumor, sell the news.' Despite the official data being positive, the stock plummeted for two main reasons.
— Sky-high expectations (overheated market). Before the release of this data, Moderna's stock had risen by over 530% over the year. Investors had already priced in a fantastic success. When merely very good (but entirely expected) figures were released, speculators decided to lock in profits and began mass-selling the shares.
— Panic due to data leak. The collapse began on Thursday morning after only partial information about the vaccine leaked online. There is nothing worse than uncertainty in the market: investors, frightened by incomplete data, panicked and triggered a sell-off even before the companies published the official and fully positive report.
