The Attack on Binance Will Accelerate the Separate Custody of Assets and Give Custodian Companies a Powerful Boost

Lessons from a High-Profile Hack: Why Crypto’s Future Lies in Security, Not Trading Volumes

Hacks and cyberattacks have occurred in the cryptocurrency world before, but the $6.3 billion incident involving the Binance exchange could completely change how investors assess crypto companies. The market’s main priorities are now no longer simply trading volumes and platform popularity, but security, reliable asset custody (custodial services), and business resilience.

Unlike the notorious collapse of FTX at the end of 2022, when its management itself engaged in fraudulent activity, the Binance team acted with lightning speed this time. The company’s head, Richard Teng, said that the exchange promptly deployed its own resources and had already replenished 98% of the affected assets.

The industry united to prevent a global crisis of confidence. Players such as Tether, Circle, and Ripple promptly froze around $3 billion in stolen funds, while Coinbase offered direct assistance and blocked transfers to the compromised wallets.

Experts note that it will be extremely difficult for small companies to survive in the new environment. Against the backdrop of stricter compliance and protection requirements, only large players capable of investing millions in cybersecurity will win.

According to Morgan Stanley analysts, the main structural change will be the separation of asset custody from trading itself. In the past, exchanges combined everything in one place, creating enormous risks. Now investors, especially institutional ones, will increasingly entrust custody to independent regulated banks and specialized platforms (such as Coinbase, BitGo, Circle, or Gemini), using exchanges exclusively to execute trades.
